This small stone sculpture is the portrait of a king of the Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 12, (possibly Amenemhet III) wearing the Nmst headdress and the cobra on his forehead. It epitomizes the Dynasty 12 style of sculpture.
Another small head of Amenemhet III was described as: “head from a statue of Amenemhat III, carved in a dark green, shelly limestone, masterly portrait of the last of the major rulers of the Middle Kingdom...The surviving statues of Amenemhat III are striking, distinguished both by their originality and their workmanship, as in the case of a small head of the King now in the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, which is one of the most elegant and subtle of his many portraits” (Shaw 2000:168).
