This uraeus (cobra) was affixed to the royal crown by a rear tenon. It was originally inlaid with blue and red enamel, glass, or stone, which have since deteriorated. The expression of the snake, however, is still as fresh today as it was the day it left its maker’s hands.
Of a similar item, Tiradritti (1998:194-243) comments: “The bronze shell of the once inlaid portions of the cobra is tooled in the same fashion as the cloisonné work of the jewelers of the end of Dynasty 18--from Amenhotep III on--so perfectly exemplified in Tutankhamun’s treasure.”
