Bronze Horus sarcophagus, Dyn.18
This bronze sarcophagus was made for a sacred cat who was seen as the earthly manifestation of the cat goddess Bastet, patron of the city of Bubastis in the delta. The remains of the cat were sealed in this little coffin 2800 years ago, and can still be heard rattling about. The bronze, once a brilliant gold color, has now achieved a smooth green patina. Probably second half of Dynasty 22.

“Certain animals were regarded as the temporal incarnation of various aspects of the godhead. Some were kept within the confines of the temples dedicated to a divinity who would occasionally be represented in the guise of that animal (the cats of Bastet)” (Ziegler 1997:78).
