This is one of the cartonnage trappings that once laid over the mummy of a dignitary named Baket. It represents Goddess Isis, capped with the solar disk, spreading her wings to protect the mummy, holding in each hand the feather of Maat, symbol of truth and justice. The hieroglyphs read: “Words by the sky god Horus, the son of Osiris, may he give coffin” (dd mdw pt hr ms wsr di krsw). The four sons of Horus, goddess Nephtys and goddess Isis, all pledge their protection of the defunct who proclaims “I am thy daughter Baket!” (i sa k bkt). Although the colors and motifs are similar to those of Dynasty 18, this individual probably lived during the Third Intermediate Period, possibly during Dynasty 23. Cartonnage Cartonnage was a material used in the production of personal funerary ornamentation (masks, pectorals, foot casings, and sometimes whole coffins). It was made with several layers of linen glued together and shaped in a mold. The resulting shell was usually coated on one side with gesso (a mixture of glue and whiting plaster). This smooth medium was well suited to detailed painting and gold leafing. Although earlier examples are known, it is around Dynasty 18 that cartonnage became a material of choice, and it remained a popular medium though the roman period. In later times, the linen layers were sometimes replaced with recycled papyrus documents. Many of the papyri currently studied by Egyptologists were recovered from cartonnage.
