Royal situla, sacred water vessel, Dyn.18
This exquisite spherical vessel from the Old Kingdom was carved out of a small block of alabaster. The hint of a delicate ring or handle, now missing, is still visible on the left.

Schlögl (1978:31, Fig.108) describes a similar item as: “alabaster, Old Kingdom, intact vessel, spherical shape, with a narrow and vertical opening. Spherical vessels were mostly used for libations, and were filled with water or wine. Hieroglyphs incorporate this style of vessel as the phonogram nu.”

Vandier d’Abbadie (1972:82-83, Fig.300) describes a similar item at the Louvre as: “Small ovoid vase without neck, with round bottom, #300, dating to the Second Intermediate Period.”
